The real place

Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, rises on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, facing the Tha Tien pier. Ferries cross between the two banks all day, while barges, tourist boats and dinner cruises share the river.

Sound

The river carries the scene: the flow of the water, engines, and from time to time a boat horn.

What happens in the scene

  • The Tha Tien – Wat Arun ferry follows its published timetable: it docks, lowers its gangway, lets passengers off and takes new ones on.
  • A tug pulls a convoy of three barges slowly upstream or downstream.
  • A two-deck tourist catamaran sails by day; a wooden restaurant barge glows in the evening.
  • At night, Wat Arun is lit up and its reflections tremble on the water.
