The real place

Sukhumvit is one of Bangkok’s great avenues, followed by the BTS Skytrain above the traffic. The scene gathers its familiar ingredients: shophouses and convenience stores, massage parlours and barbers, street food carts, and towers such as The Esse on the skyline. Storefronts and signs are fictional.

Sound

With sound on, you hear the street: traffic, scooters and tuk-tuks passing, the Skytrain going by overhead, the chime of a shop door. Music genres can play on top, each with its own volume.

What happens in the scene

  • BTS trains follow the timetable of Asok station, from early morning until just after midnight.
  • Shoppers queue, go into shops and come back out, sometimes with a bag or a new haircut.
  • Buses, taxis, tuk-tuks, vans and motorbikes follow the rhythm of the hour.
  • At night, windows and signs light up; rain darkens the sky and the street.
